Philosophy:
Effective web sites are a combination of art and science: the art of communication and the science of technology. On today’s web, some web sites have great technical qualities, but do not communicate well. On the other hand, some web sites look great, but provide little information because they do not make good use of available technology. I work to provide solutions that strike a balance of these important web design aspects.

Design:
I am a creative web designer with 3+ years of web design experience in the governmental and commercial sectors. My designs reflect my Nordic upbringing. Typical of Nordic/Scandinavian design, I use simple, dramatic elements to draw attention to the features communicating the site’s message. Each design element should serve a purpose that simultaneously communicates and is aesthetically pleasing.

Technology:
I am also a technical, self-motivated web designer. My technical background is based on a B.S. in Information Technology with emphasis on multimedia and a minor in technical journalism. I was trained in Finland where Information Technologies of all kind are an integral part of society. Because of this background, I can readily see opportunities for applying I.T. and web solutions.

Graduating from college did not mean that I stopped learning about web design. I understand that to be competitive in the web design industry, I need to constantly learn new techniques. Within one year I learned Flash, PHP, and MySQL. One of my favorite aspects of web design is that it allows me to continually learn, apply, and experiment with new techniques and technologies.

Flash is one example of a technique I learned on my own and applied for a client. I developed and produced a flash-based, informational advertisement for a computer software program. The demonstration strives to inform the user about the software, its application, and its customizable features. Most recently I have focused on studying PHP and database design. Two of my ongoing projects, Wisconsin Coalition Against Sexual Assault and Grizzworks will apply this technology. Click on the project links to see these designs on my portfolio page.

Summary:
Web technology can be a powerful instrument for an organization. My web solutions combine excellent communication with sound technology to make them effective. I quickly learn and apply new techniques to provide creative, innovative web solutions.
